Gamera is a giant, flying turtle-like creature from a popular series of monster movies produced by Daiei Motion Picture Company in Japan. The series was started in 1965 to rival the success of Toho Studios' Godzilla during the kaiju ( giant monster ) boom of the mid-to-late 1960s. Gamera is always a defender of the earth from annihilation by a multitude of enemies.
Gamera has gained fame and notoriety as a Japanese icon in his own right over the years. A new Gamera design can be seen in the recent release of "Gamera: The Little Braves."
