In "Godzilla vs. Hedorah" (1971) the Godzilla franchise first tackled the global pollution problem. Hedorah, the Smog Monster is a mobile ball of sludge first created when an alien spore combined with toxins created by man. Hedorah is a transforming monster, beginning life as a multitude of tiny creatures swimming in polluted waters. As they meet, they converge into an ever growing ball of sludge until it evolves into a giant monster in search of concentrated pollutants.
